First time painting? Here’s how to prep.

The Fear of Mucking Up can be overwhelming for a novice FOMU Fighter. But never fear, British Paints simple tips and tricks ought to give you an advantage in your fight against FOMU, and get your project done right, first time.

Of course, cutting corners never leads to paint job perfection. A true Fighter knows it’s all about preparation, technique and knowledge. Here are some of our favourite tips to get you started.

Cleaning the wall

Giving your walls a good wash to get rid of dust and flakes is an important first step. But it’s also a time consuming, especially if you’re using a wet cloth. Try using a wet squeegee mop instead, and you’ll be done in no time.

Washing the paint roller

You’ve given your walls a thorough washing and patched up every hole. Yet you’re still finding bits of fluff in your paint’s finish. Why? Well, that might be the unfortunate result of a roller that hasn’t been thoroughly washed. Keep quality in mind when you’re buying your next roller, and always give them a proper cleaning.

Pour paint over the label

If you’re pouring paint into a mixing pot or tray, you’re more than likely to get a few streaks down the paint tin. Make sure you always pour paint over the front label of the tin, rather than the back. You won’t be able to fight FOMU if you can’t read the instructions, will you?

Remember the foil

A DIY paint job might take a few days to complete, so it’s important to know how to properly store your paint. If you’ve got paint in your tray you’d like to use, you won’t need to tip it back in the tin. Simply wrap it tightly in foil to keep it from drying out. When you’re ready to get back to work, your paints will be ready to go.
